The meeting point for the "Rome Unveiled" tour is the Arch of Constantine next to the Colosseum. The spiritual and political legacy left on this precious monument by the first emperor who accepted and spread the new Christian cult will help us to better understand the history of the monastic communities that settled on the Celian hill and are still present in this area today. From here we will move to the early Christian complex of San Gregorio Magno, founded in 575 AD. by the saint himself, a member of the Roman aristocracy who became a monk. The monumental complex has three oratories full of works of art; a major church, in which we will visit the splendid portico frescoed with the stories of the saint; the beautiful Salviati Chapel, one of the first Baroque interiors in the city, designed by the architect Francesco da Volterra. The chapel holds a miraculous icon representing the Madonna who, according to tradition, spoke to San Gregorio. We will then move to Clivus Scauri, which in ancient times was the main road that crossed the Celio. Near the Basilica of Saints John and Paul, after seeing the remains of the Temple of Claudius, we will have the opportunity to go down to the undergrounds of Rome for an exciting archaeological experience: we will visit a Roman house (domus). A vast commercial building complex (Insula), rich in frescoes and decorations, which in the 3rd century AD. was transformed into a private home. Through the Arch of Dolabella and Silano, one of the many monumental gates created in the defensive walls of the city, we will reach Villa Celimontana, a green and panoramic lung where we will observe numerous tree species and a spectacular view. Our tour will end with visiting one of the most important medieval churches in Rome: the Basilica of Santo Stefano Rotondo, a rare example of a perfectly circular architecture of Christian worship, built on a temple dedicated to the God Mithras.
