The collection is showcased in the two splendid Renaissance buildings, the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, flanking the Palazzo Senatorio, today’s townhall of Rome, on Piazza del Campidoglio. The collection is truly boundless, but Some works are absolutely unmissable for their importance and aesthetic refinement: the Equstrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the only ancient equestrian monument which prevented us intact and in excellent condition, the portrait of the emperor Commodus, the Capitoline Venus, the archaic terracotta from the sacred area of Sant'Omobono and the famous Capitoline She-Wolf.
During the visit this museum excites for its sections, which tell us the history of archeology in Rome, such as the rooms dedicated to the Horti, the luxurious homes that exponents of the Roman aristocracy, such as Maecenas, built on the edge of the city in areas surrounded by greenery. But a visit to the Capitoline Museums is much more than that. In fact, along the way we will see fascinating decorative cycles, such as the frescoes that tell the story of the origins of Rome by the painter Cavalier d'Arpino and we will discover ruins of the most important sanctuary of Ancient Rome, in the very heart of the museum: the Temple of Jupiter Optimal Maximus. We will see also two painting by Caravaggio.
