Originally built as a Bourbon royal residence, the Museum and Royal Wood of Capodimonte was later designated to house the collections and inheritances of the rulers of Naples, eventually becoming one of the most extraordinary treasure chests of European art collecting and a symbol of the city’s cultural wealth.
Ascending the monumental staircase, you will immediately immerse yourself in the splendor of the renowned Farnese Collection: masterpieces by Titian, Masolino, Masaccio, preparatory cartoons by Raphael and Michelangelo, and key works of art history unfold through galleries arranged both chronologically and geographically. The visit continues with the elegant Royal Apartments, where you can relive the magnificence of the Bourbon era and Neoclassical taste in richly decorated interiors.
The second floor is dedicated to Neapolitan art, offering a fascinating journey from medieval works to the early Renaissance, through the 16th century and the great Baroque period. Caravaggio’s extraordinary Flagellation of Christ opens the most prolific chapter of Neapolitan painting, followed by artists such as Jusepe de Ribera, Battistello Caracciolo, and Luca Giordano, leading to the genre scenes of the Neapolitan Rococo.
The third and final floor hosts the permanent contemporary art collection: from Alberto Burri’s monumental Grande Cretto to the iconic Vesuvius by Andy Warhol, donated to the city after the 1980 earthquake, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity.
Capodimonte amazes in every detail: the richness of its interiors is matched by the beauty of the Royal Park, a vast panoramic green space where you can conclude your experience in an exclusive atmosphere blending nature, art, and history.
