Founded in 1325 by order of Duke Charles of Anjou, the Certosa di San Martino became the mother church of the Carthusian Order: even today, around the magnificent monumental cloister, the small monastic cells reflect the monks’ search for peace, silence, and spirituality.
The major renovation that began in 1590 transformed the Certosa into one of the most important artistic sites in Southern Italy: artists and craftsmen from Rome and across the Spanish Viceroyalty were commissioned to decorate the church, contributing to the creation of an authentic masterpiece of Neapolitan Baroque art.
The works, which lasted about a century with various modifications and expansions, now offer visitors an extraordinary spectacle: from the majestic frescoed vault to the polychrome marble floors and richly decorated side chapels, every space represents an artistic treasure of inestimable value.
The beauty of the Certosa captivates both inside and out: from its panoramic terraces, you can admire one of the most breathtaking views of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius, the Gulf, and the historic center appearing radiant on sunny days and equally evocative in the rain.
